Robert Henrie Descheemaeker, Sr., 81, of 328 Broadway, Hanover, died Monday, January 2, 2012 at Hanover Hospital. He was the son of the late Henrie Descheemaeker who was killed in WWII and the late Hazel (Krenzer) Descheemaeker Pyles and step son of the late Iris Pyles.
He is survived by a daughter Carol A. Smith and husband Fred and their son David all of Indiana, Carol’s son Clinton and wife Heather and their son Caleb of Hanover & their Step-daughters Hannah and Molly, Carol’s son Tony Creager of Arkansas; daughter in law Donna, wife of his late son John and their children Bryant, Kyle, Emily and Kady Descheemaeker; two sisters Jean Redding and her children Joseph, Mike, Cindy and great nephew Andrew all of Alexandria, VA and Dawn Geiman and her husband Burnell and their daughter Julie of Hanover; also surviving is a step daughter Missy and her daughter Lacy West.
Mr. Descheemaeker was predeceased by another (infant) son David D. Descheemaeker.
Robert was retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years. He served on all types of ships from cruisers, destroyers, mine sweepers and the smallest (MSB’s). He was a letter carrier for seven years in Hanover from 1967 to 1974 then transferred to New Cumberland Army Depot and retired in 1989 ending 43 years of service. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, York St., Hanover. Bob was a life member and past commander of Harold H. Bair American Legion Post 14, life member and all state post commander of Hanover V.F.W. Post 2506 and a life member of the Military Order of Cooties, the Hanover AMVETS Post 22, Hanover and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 111, Hanover. Other memberships include Past Gov. of the Hanover Moose Lodge #227, McSherrystown Moose, New Oxford Social Club and the USS Bremerton, CA 130 Association and a life member of the Cruisers Association.
A service to celebrate the life of Robert H. Descheemaeker, Sr., will be held on Friday at 11:00am at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA with Pastor Larry McConnell and Chaplain George Hummer officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Thursday evening from 6 to 8pm at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover with full Military Honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
