Julia "Judy" G. (Glatfelter) Alwood
RED LION - Julia "Judy" G. (Glatfelter) Alwood, 91, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Thursday, April 5, 2018, at York Hospital. She was the wife of the late George D. Alwood.
A Celebration of Life tribute service will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at Grace Lutheran Church, 220 N. Charles St., Red Lion, with her Pastor, the Rev. Courtney Erzkus officiating. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to noon prior to the service. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover. Life Tributes by Olewiler & Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., 35 Gotham Place, Red Lion, is in charge of arrangements.
Born Feb. 15, 1927, in East Berlin, Judy was the youngest daughter of the late Ursinus L. and Alice A. (Harman) Glatfelter. She was vice president of her class at East Berlin High School. She went on to graduate from cosmetology school and became owner and operator of Judy's Beauty Shop. She also worked administratively for Yorktowne Kitchens from 1970 until her retirement in 1989. Judy and George owned Alwood's Music House and Alwood Apartments. Mrs. Alwood was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Red Lion. She was also a member of the Jewish Community Center, the Red Lion Fire Company Auxiliary, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. Judy enjoyed playing cards and swimming, even receiving an award for swimming more than 50 miles. Judy will leave a legacy of love for all who knew her and were touched by her loving spirit, for in her own words, "I look at the heart of the person, nothing else matters."
Mrs. Alwood leaves her loving family of two daughters, Jane L. Alwood of Hanover and Carol D. Clark and her husband, Tom, of Red Lion; three grandchildren, Amanda Julia Handy and her husband, Robert, of Red Lion, Crystal Jane Clark of Philadelphia, and Adam Thomas Clark and his wife, Samantha, of Elkins Park; four great-grandchildren, Olivia, Tommy, Calvin and Margot; and Sandy Lawrence, who was like a daughter to Judy. In addition to her husband and parents, Judy was preceded in death by her paternal aunt and uncle who raised her, Esther G. and Peter W. Kimmel; and four siblings, George R. Glatfelter, Rosella Altland, Casper L. Glatfelter, and Victor A. Glatfelter.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to Providence Place of Dover and Golden Visions Adult Day Service and Senior Center of Hanover. They would also like to thank the 7th floor staff, the hospital chaplains, the hospice chaplains and the hospice team at WellSpan York Hospital for the exceptional care they took of Judy.
