Thomas E. Diviney, 90, of Hanover, loving husband of Minerva L. Bowersox Diviney, entered into God’s eternal care on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at SpiriTrust Lutheran-The Village at Utz Terrace following a period of declining health.
Born on Sunday, July 18, 1926 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Thurman H. and Myrtle M. Bortner Diviney. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Lorna Biddle.
A 1944 graduate of Eichelberger High School, Tom continued his education at Gettysburg College and graduated in 1949, earning his Bachelor’s degree in math. Following college, he was employed as a teacher and a coach and later worked in private industry. He worked at Sylvania Electric Corporation for 12 years and General Electric for 15 years, before his retirement in 1986. A member of First United Methodist Church of Hanover, he had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. During his time abroad, Tom worked on the destroyer USS Albert W. Grant in the South Pacific. He volunteered as an English tutor and enjoyed hobbies such as woodworking, bowling, and golfing. A kind and gentle person, he was always a pleasure to be around. He especially enjoyed the many hours he spent playing with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife of nearly 67 years, survivors include a son, Thomas S. Diviney and his wife, Elaine, of Westminster, MD; two grandchildren, Allison and Shawn Diviney of Cockeysville, MD; a brother, Ellis “Jake” Diviney of New Oxford; and a sister, Nancy Blickenstaff of Cottage Grove, OR.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, April 28, 2017 at Panebaker Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Inc., 311 Broadway, Hanover with The Rev. Gregory A. Rapp officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military graveside rites being rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
