Arlene M. Barnhart, 93, of Hanover, PA, entered God's eternal care on Saturday, February 28, 2015, at Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center, Hanover, PA.
Born May 19, 1921, in Hanover, PA, she was a daughter of the late Ezra G. and Laura M. (Kitzmiller) Markle. She was the loving wife of the late Curvin W. "Barney" Barnhart who died in 1979.
Arlene was a member of St. Paul's (Dubs) United Church of Christ, Hanover, PA.
Arlene, along with her husband, owned and operated Barnhart's Market. She made many items which were sold in the deli. They owned rental properties together, which she continued to operate after his death.
Arlene loved to cook, and was an avid reader. She enjoyed traveling, which she did in all fifty states. Arlene remembered fondly the many trips and cruises she took with area retirees. She was an Orioles fan from the time the team arrived in Baltimore, and attended the 1st opening day parade with her husband Barney, and had season tickets for many years.
Arlene is survived by her children, Barbara S. Jackson and her husband J. Donald of Hanover, PA, and Thomas S. Barnhart of Hanover, PA; grandchildren, Mitchell A. Jackson and his wife Lisa of Middletown, DE, Matthew E. Jackson of Hanover, PA, Mark P. Jackson and wife Rebekah of Baltimore, MD, Christina L. Wagner and her husband Christopher of McMurray, PA; great grandchildren, Kyle A. Wagner and Sheridan L. Wagner; a brother-in-law, Hurst W. Brillhart and wife Nancy of Hanover, PA; and a sister-in-law, Ramona Fuhrman and her husband Eugene "Ben" of Hanover, PA. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Viola Gable and husband David, and Dorothy G. Markle, one brother, Merle L. Markle and his wife Frances.
A service to celebrate and remember Arlene will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, March 6, 2015, at Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA, with her pastor the Rev. Larry M. Estepp officiating. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be from 10:00-11:00 AM, Friday, March 6, 2015, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Arlene to St. Paul's (Dubs) United Church of Christ, 1958 Dub's Church Road, Hanover, PA 17331 or to Hanover's Guthrie Memorial Public Library, for Large Print Books, 2 Library Place, Hanover, PA 17331.
