Austin S. Ruth Jr., 94, of Hanover, PA, entered into God's eternal care, Thursday, January 16, 2014 at Homewood at Plum Creek Retirement Center with his loving family by his side.
Born September 30, 1919 in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Austin S. Sr. and Nellie S. (Sprenkle) Ruth. Austin was the loving husband of Helen M. (Martin) Ruth who died December 22, 2005.
Austin served his country proudly with the United States Army Air Corp. during World War II. He earned his BA in History from Elizabethtown College in 1941.
Austin retired from the United States Postal Service at Doubleday, where he was a transportation expediter.
Austin was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Hanover, PA, where he was the archivist for many years.
Austin belonged to the Gettysburg Region of the Antique Automobile Association of America, the Hanover Area Historical Society, the Circus Model Builders (Leonard Aylesworth Ring), the York Postcard Club, and the York Heritage Trust. He was a true Hanover history buff and a steam engine enthusiast.
Austin is survived by his daughters, Patricia R. Ormond and her husband Nate of Hanover, PA and Julie A. Ruth and her husband Richard P. Wilhelm of Philadelphia, PA; and one granddaughter, Natalie R. Ormond.
A funeral service to celebrate and remember Austin will be held 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the Chapel at Homewood at Plum Creek Retirement Center, 425 Westminster Road, Hanover, PA, with the Rev. Joel Hummel officiating. A visitation and time to share memories with the family will be held from 9:30-10:30 AM, Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the chapel. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the memorial contributions may be made in Austin's name to the Homewood Benevolent Care Fund c/o Homewood at Plum Creek, 425 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, PA 17331 or to the Hanover Area Historical Society, 105 High Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
