Ruth A. Stitt, 104, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care, Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at the Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center.
Born January 23, 1917 in Petersburg, WV, she was the daughter of the late Calvin O. and Myrtle A. (Groves) Turner. Ruth was loving wife of the late Ray Eugene Stitt with whom she shared 67 years of marriage until his passing on March 15, 2000.
Ruth & Ray bought a farm in 1938 in Gettysburg. They farmed with horses and without electricity, buying things they needed as they saved the money to pay cash for them. They bought a house on Moul Avenue and moved to Hanover in 1955.
Ruth was a 60 plus year member of Grace United Church of Christ, Hanover, PA, was a member of the Homewood Auxiliary and the National and local A.A.R.P. She walked with the Mall Walkers well into her 80’s, and volunteered at the Hanover Area Council of Churches as well as at her church.
Ruth worked as a custodian in the South Western School District for over 21 years until her retirement and part time at Cremer Florist for many years.
Ruth enjoyed traveling with her family and visited 48 states.
Ruth is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, John C. Stitt; five brothers, Clarence Turner, Theodore Turner, Eston Turner, Carl Turner, Therman Turner; five sisters, Alice Bowers, Catherine Thomas, Ethel Keplinger, Mabel Turner, and Nellie Crites.
A viewing for Ruth will be held from 11:45 AM to 12:45 PM, Friday, March 5, 2021 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA. A procession will then leave the funeral home and arrive at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 725 Baltimore Street, Hanover, PA for a 1:00 PM, graveside service with her Pastor the Rev. Bonnie Whittier officiating.
