I first met Charlie almost 40 years ago when I worked for her husband Bill, attempting to sell life insurance. We were sitting in the livingroom at their farm when Charlie appeared at the door with an armful of wildflowers and the most beautiful smile. I would learn later that Charlie could often be found among the wildflowers. She collected them just about anywhere, then dried them and turned them into beautiful arrangements. She had shared some stories with me about having to talk her way out of trouble more than once when caught collecting flowers where she wasn't supposed to be. But Charlie had a story for Everything! It's one of the things I would learn to love about her. Shortly after meeting her for the first time I started a job at Patty and John's Restaurant and found that Charlie was also working there. She was well respected by her co-workers and a favorite among the customers. Charlie was a lady. She was graceful, respectful of others, and kind. I can't remember her ever saying anything bad about anyone. And her laughter was infectious. I often heard her laughing before I saw her. I was fortunate enough to call her a friend. Charlie took a second job working at Ski Liberty, where she earned discounts on travel to other ski resorts. She was a masterful skier and traveled to resorts all over the world to ski, often accompanied by another friend and coworker, Mike Overholtzer, and two customers who had become friends, Donna and Bill Fuss. On one trip the airline had lost their luggage and they ended up at the mountain with no ski equipment. Charlie didn't let that get her down. They rented snowmobiles and rode all over the mountain, ending up at a hot springs, surrounded by deep snow. She told me that as they sat in the springs they drank champagne while a chef prepared their meal right beside them. Others might have sulked about losing their things, but Charlie turned it onto another adventure! Nothing stopped Charlie! Her next job was delivering mail for the postal service. She told me that the first day they had to send someone to find her and bring her back. She said that she was sure people were sitting on their porches saying, "There she goes again", as she circled for the third time trying to find the right addresses. I'm pretty sure her 50th birthday was behind her when she started a new career as a flight attendant. She was perfect for the job and loved to travel. There is even a video of Charlie and another steward that went viral on U-Tube, where they were making everyone aboard laugh as they gave pre-flight instructions. Typical Charlie! But she didn't limit her travel to her job. Charlie traveled to many countries, usually with a friend or a small group, and took photographs that rivaled anything I've ever seen. And of course, had a story for every trip. Once in the Serengeti there was a lion kill right outside of her tent. Another time when she was hosted by a local family for dinner, I teased her about misunderstanding the invitation, when she ate her first 'grub'!! No matter what she did, Charlie did it all the way. If you were lucky enough to be invited for a meal, even if you were the only guest, you were treated to something special. And Charlie was always a gracious host. I know that she suffered a great deal the past few years, but that still didn't hold her back. She hopped on her scooter and went anywhere it would take her. Even after hitting a bad patch of sidewalk and being thrown off and injured, it wasn't long before she was right back at it. I will miss her very much. From the lunches and day long card games we had with my mom, to the movies she enjoyed so much, to just going out for dinner and hearing her stories, she will be missed. Charlie had so many friends and was always busy going somewhere with someone. I'm sure that many others are feeling the shock and pain of losing her. Little did I know that day she first appeared at her farm with an armful of flowers, that I was meeting a lifelong friend.

We built our home next to the Wiles family back in 1963. We could not have had nicer neighbors, they were such a good, fun family. Such good memories of all of them.
