Obituary
Bertha Meckley departed this life on May 24, 2017, after a brief illness. After spending her early years in Reading, PA, she moved to Hanover at the time of her marriage to Alvin Meckley, who predeceased her in 1979, after 35 happy years together. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Homewood at Plum Creek, Hanover, where she made many friends and was an enthusiastic participant in events and activities.
Bertha was a traditional homemaker and devoted mother to her daughters Jan Fritz of Hanover and Beth Line of York. She was always in awe of having lived a life that began when women got the right to vote and spanned the decades that led to the advancement of space exploration. Her family will miss her PA Dutch cooking and the many stories she shared about her family’s history, including daring tales of adventure and activism during the Civil War Reconstruction Era, Prohibition, and the Great Depression.
She was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover, and a former member of the YMCA, where she enjoyed water exercise activities for over 30 years. She was an avid reader and enjoyed outdoor physical activities, which kept her physically and mentally fit throughout her long life.
Her family and friends will always cherish the memory of her positive attitude, appreciation of life and love of family and those close to her.
She is survived by her daughters; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Line of Manhattan and Dr. Christian Line and his wife Sarah of Annville, PA; and two great-granddaughters, Leah and Charlotte.
Family and friends are invited to join us on Saturday, June 3, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 725 Baltimore St., Hanover, for a graveside service officiated by Pastor Dan Yeiser. Representatives of Kenworthy Funeral Home will be at the entrances to the cemetery to direct you.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Employee Appreciation Fund of Homewood at Plum Creek, 425 Westminster Avenue, Hanover, PA 17331.
The Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA, has been entrusted by the family with the funeral arrangements. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.kenworthyfh.com.
