Herbert P. “Herb” Rutters, 92 of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at Hanover Hall. He was the loving husband of Montyce (Goodfellow) Rutters; together they shared 67 years of marriage.
Born September 19, 1923 in Hanover, he was a son of the late Richard R. and Miriam (Butler) Rutters.
Herb attended Eichelberger Senior High School, York Junior College, Dickinson College, Duquesne University, and Northwestern University.
Prior to the Pearl Harbor attack, Herb joined the United States Army Air Corps and attended engineering and flight school; He spent 18 months in the southwest Pacific area, principally in New Guinea and the Philippines, flying combat missions in B-25's and A-20's.
Herb was released from the service in 1946 and then recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict. He spent an overseas tour in France, was a member of the Expeditionary forces during the Cuban crisis, and spent 14 months in the combat area of Viet Nam. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for combat flight and held the Distinguished Service Medal among other decorations. They included the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze stars, the American Campaign Medal, the American Defense Medal, the Victory Medal of WWII, the National Defense Medal, and the Philippine Invasion Medal. Herb retired from the Air Force with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1970 after 29 years of service.
Herb was a member of the American Legion Post 14, the VFW Post 2506, the BPO Elks Lodge #763, the AMVETS, and the Home Association of McSherrystown. He was also a member of the Air Force Association and the Retired Officers Association.
An ardent woodworker, he had great interest in the restoration of antique furniture and made many reproductions
In addition to his wife Montyce, Herb is survived by, two daughters, Anne Acker and her husband Steve of Spring Grove, Joan Etzler and her husband Larry of Hanover; Herb is also survived by two grandchildren, Leslie Etzler of West Chester, and Logan Etzler of Hanover.
In addition to his parents, Herb was preceded in death by, four brothers Richard, Leon, Henry, and Frederick, and two sisters, Romaine and Geraldine.
A graveside service to celebrate the life of Herbert P. Rutters will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 23, 2016 at Mt Olivet Cemetery, 725 Baltimore St, Hanover, PA with Rev. Scott A. Sager officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
