S. Edward Murphy, 93, of Hanover, PA, entered into God's eternal care, Monday, March 14, 2011 at the Hanover Hospital.
Born July 2, 1917 in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late G.C. "Pat" and Blanche (Hostetter) Murphy.
Edward was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Hanover, PA
Edward was a 1935 graduate of Eichelberger High School and a graduate of the Pierce Business School in Philadelphia, PA. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served his country proudly as a Staff Sergeant during World War II, where he was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Edward was an Insurance Broker in the greater Hanover area for over 40 years. He was very involved in the community. He was a Charter member and first president of the Hanover Jaycees and during his presidency the Jaycees started the Hanover Halloween Parade which is still run by the Jaycees today. He was a member and past President of the Hanover Rotary Club and entertained many foreign visitors who came to visit Hanover.
Edward was an avid skier and hiker. He belonged to many different clubs such as the Maryland Hiking Club and the York Hiking Club. He belonged to the Seed Savers had an organic garden and also grew Christmas Trees and Bamboo.
Edward is survived by one brother, William H. Murphy and his wife Irene of Hanover, PA. He was preceded in death by two brothers, J. Robert Murphy and David C. Murphy.
A funeral services to celebrate and remember Edward's life will be held 11AM, Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 124 Broadway, Hanover, PA, with his Pastor the Rev. Patricia Leader officiating. Burial will be in mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA. The family will receive friends and share memories from 6-8PM, Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Edward may be made to Emmanuel United Church of Christ, 124 Broadway, Hanover, PA 17331 or to the charity of your choice.
