Obituary

Dr. Irene M. Murphy, 89, of Hanover, PA, entered into God's eternal care, Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at the Hanover Hospital.

Born September 9, 1924 in Toccoa, GA, she was the daughter of the late Thomas C. and Lucy
(Franklin) Maxwell. Irene was the loving wife of William H. Murphy with whom she would have celebrated 62 years of marriage with on August 17th.

Irene received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Millersville University in Lancaster, her Masters Degree in Education from McDaniel College, formerly Western Maryland College and earned her PhD in Education from the University of Maryland.

She was a member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ of Hanover where she was very active. Over the years, she served on the governing board as well as serving as a Sunday School teacher. Irene was also a member of the Hanover Garden Club as well as the Hanover Country Club. She was a charter member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International since 1962 and served as the International President from 1994-1996. She also served on the local and state levels of the Society.

Dr. Murphy was a life-long educator. She was a reading specialist with the South Western School District for 23 years until her retirement in 1988. She continued as a substitute teacher until reaching her early 80's.

She was an accomplished golfer and liked pursuing her hobby through the years. Irene also enjoyed reading, gardening and helping those in need.

In addition to her husband, Irene is survived by her granddaughters, Jenelle Anselmi and her husband Greg of Timonium, MD, Jamie Murphy of Columbia, MD, her great-grandchildren, Sean, Anthony, Isabella, Aaron, her two brothers and her five sisters. She was preceded in death by her son, David T. Murphy, two brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, August 11, 2014 at Emmanuel United Church of Christ 124 Broadway, Hanover, PA with Rev. Uble M. Frost officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA. A viewing and time to share memories will be held from 5-7 PM, Sunday, August 10, 2014 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover, PA.
