Nevin A. Hamme, 88, passed peacefully on Monday, May 29, 2006, at Hanover Hospital.
Born January 15, 1918, in Glenville, he was a son of the late Milton R. and Lillie Mae (Smith) Hamme.
Nevin was a veteran of WWII, serving as a Supply Sgt. with the U.S. Army 3rd Armored Division. He was involved in five European Campaigns, including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Harold H. Bair American Legion Post #14 in Hanover and the National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution; and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2506 in Hanover. Mr. Hamme was a graduate of Codorus Twp. High School and received his B.A. from Gettysburg College. He then moved to Tuscaloosa to attend graduate school at the University of Alabama. While in Alabama, he was a science teacher at Gadsden High School and a Professor of Chemistry at the Univ. of Alabama. He also did chemical research for the U.S. Bureau of Mines and was a member of the American Chemical Society. Nevin continued his chemical research for the U.S. Government at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, until his retirement and return to Hanover.
His survivors include a brother, Leander "Ted" Hamme of Hanover; three sisters, Ruth Shaeffer of Hanover, Anna Mae Cline of Glenville, and Helen Ports of Hanover; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Nevin was preceded in death by four brothers, Roy, Lloyd, Russell, and Harry Hamme; and two sisters, Grace Besser and Mary Jane Trimmer Garrett.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. on Friday, June 2, at the Wetzel Funeral Home, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, with the Rev. Ted Lewis officiating. The viewing will be Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, where full military honors will be provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
