Leroy B. “Sponnie” Sponseller, 86 of Hanover, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2015 at home. He was the loving husband of Evelyn L. (Showaker) Sponseller for 17 years.
Born February 8, 1928 in Adams County, PA, he was the son of the late Jesse H. and Rebecca (Wherley) Sponseller.
Sponnie was employed for 55 years with Hanover Wire Cloth prior to retiring in 2006. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and served his country proudly during WWII. Leroy was a life-long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hampton, PA. He was also a dedicated volunteer at the Hanover Red Cross blood mobiles for a number of years.
In addition to his wife Evelyn, Sponnie is survived by his son, Edmond L. Sponseller of Hanover, his grandson, Douglas Sponseller of Hanover and his great grandson, Henry D. Sponseller; his step children, Michael J. Dillman, York, Deborah A. Long, Gettysburg, Donald R. Dillman, North Carolina, Karen L. Bowersox, Gettysburg, Diana E. Chronister, Aspers and Jeffrey A. Dillman, Littlestown and many nieces and nephews and step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mildred Arlene (Sterner) Sponseller and eight siblings; Earnest, Earl, John and Edward Sponseller and Cora Messinger, Margaret Null, Mable Laughman and Marie Duncan.
A service to celebrate the life of Leroy “Sponnie” Sponseller will be held at 11am on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2015 at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA with Pastor Ben Leese officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8pm and again on Thursday from 10am until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover.
