Joan C. (Mitas) Fuhrman, age 76, passed away at home on March 4, 2015.
Joan was born on September 8, 1939 in Johnstown, PA and was the daughter of the late Frank L. and Walerya (Sikora) Mitas. She graduated from Johnstown High School in 1957. She attended Hanover General Hospital School of X-Ray. She received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Biology from York College and most recently continued her education at Penn State York. Joan worked for Hanover General Hospital as an X-Ray Technician until she retired at the age of 70. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in York. Some of her favorite hobbies were taking care of her yard, the birds, and gardening.
Joan is survived by her daughter Lila Quickel and companion Shane Bailey of York, son Russell Fuhrman Jr. of Delaware, two granddaughters, Valerie Quickel and Virginia Fuhrman. She is also survived by her sisters Helen Barkhymer and Florence Ballow, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Stanley, Leonard, and Henry Mitas, and sisters Amelia Bunk and Wanda Mitas.
The family would like to offer a special thanks to Bonnie Bailey and Bernice Fuhrman for all of the care and compassion they showed to Joan. Visits and gifts were much appreciated. The neighbors also kept watch and made her feel safe. They would also like to thank the staff caregivers at VNA Hospice and Preferred Health Staff of Fairfield, PA.
Following cremation, a Memorial Mass in celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 10:00 am St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5055 Grandview Rd, Hanover, PA 17331. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hanover.
