Obituary
YORKTOWN, VA - Surrounded by her loving family, an angel visited Jean Louise Zinn Saltzgiver the evening of July 2, 2009, and lifted her soul to heaven.
Jean, 76 years of age, fought a courageous battle with Parkinson's Disease for over 25 years, but this never dimmed her spirit, and playful sense of humor, which brought joy to everyone who was blessed to know her. Jean was born in York County, Pa., April 24, 1933, the daughter of Maurice E. and Bertha H. (Leese) Zinn. She married Rodger, on May 30, 1954, and enjoyed traveling the world with her military husband and children. Her husband, Rodger is a retired Air Force Master Sergeant and they made their home in Hampton, VA for 37 years. Later the couple moved to Colonial Harbor in Yorktown, VA. Jean graduated Summa Cum Laude, in 1985, with an Associate Degree in Accounting from Thomas Nelson Community College, Hampton, VA.
Jean was a pioneer in Parkinson's Disease research, conducted by the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C., by volunteering for deep brain stimulation implants in 2001.
Jean touched many lives with her gift as a mentor volunteering as a Girl Scout leader, homeroom mother and active PTA member. She found blessing and joy in sewing, quilting, cooking, drawing, board games, but most of all spending time with family and friends.
Jean has been a member of Trinity United Church of Christ in Hanover, Pa., for over 60 years and attended Bethany United Methodist Church in Hampton, Va., for over 35 years.
Jean is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Rodger; loving children, Wendy Saltzgiver of Hampton, VA Wade Saltzgiver (Karen) of Hampton, VA and Laurie Sell (David) of St. Charles, MN; and brother, Charles E. Zinn (Lorranie) of Shippensburg, PA. She will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know her.
The family extends immense gratitude towards all the wonderful caregivers who provided Jean with compassionate and loving care provided by the Visiting Angels Staff of Newport News, VA, especially Keyshia, Amber, Mula, Dee, Samantha, Susan, and the Riverside Hospice Staff of Newport News, VA especially Jane Bean RN.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 A.M. Friday, July 10, 2009 at Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA. A procession will follow visitation to the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA for a burial service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to the
American Parkinson's Disease Association, 135 Parkinson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10305 or
