John M. Wetzel, 89, of Hanover, PA, entered into God's eternal care, Monday, February 25, 2013 at the Village at Laurel Run Nursing Center.
Born September 27, 1923 in Hanover, PA, he was the son of the late Paul L. and Katie (Menges) Wetzel. John was the loving husband of June M.B. (Reindollar) Wetzel who died October 28, 2008.
Mr. Wetzel was a 1941 graduate of Eichelberger High School and the Thompson Business School in York, PA.
John was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover, PA where he served as a past member of the Church Council as well as volunteering in different capacities over the years. Mr. Wetzel also enjoyed donating his time to the American Red Cross.
He retired from Metropolitan Edison in 1983 after 33 years of service.
John was an avid card player and loved to travel. He enjoyed photography and was a member of the Hanover Photography Club. He also was a lifelong musician and was an accomplished piano and organ player.
John is survived by two daughters, Jacquelyn K. Reynold and her husband L. Gene of Hanover, PA, Sharon M. Staub and her husband, David "Ute"of McSherrystown, PA, four granddaughters, Heather Lawrence and her husband Jacob of Hanover, PA, Courtney Myers and her husband Nate of Weems, VA, Natasha Holm of New York City, NY, Leah Stambaugh of Allentown, PA, two great-granddaughters, Olivia and Savanna Lawrence of Hanover.
A funeral service to celebrate and remember John's life will be held 1 PM, Friday, March 1, 2013 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick St., Hanover, PA, with his Pastor the Rev. Dr. Daniel M. Yeiser officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 6-8 PM, Thursday, February 28, 2013 at the funeral home and from 12-1 PM Friday at the funeral home.
Serving as casketbearers will be L. Gene Reynold, David "Ute" Staub, Jacob Lawrence, Nate Myers and Craig Zumbrun.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of John may be made to St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 W. Chestnut Street, Hanover, PA 17331 or to the charity of your choice.
