Robert Orin Gerkin, 70, of New Oxford, PA, entered God’s Eternal care, January 13, 2017 at the York Hospital.
Born July 24, 1946, in Columbus, OH, he was the son of the late Orin W. and Irene J. (Kruse) Gerkin. Robert was the loving husband of Carol R. (Chakas) Gerkin with whom he shared 48 years of marriage.
Robert was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hanover, PA, where he was the current president of the church council. He was a member of the Holy Name Society, the Hanover Knights of Columbus and the Sertoma Club of York, PA.
Robert served his country proudly in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War having served three tours.
Robert worked in telecommunications engineering, installation and inspections. He was employed by the New England Telephone Company, Gray Communications, SAIC, and retired from General Dynamics-Signal Division.
Robert enjoyed fishing, had a passion for cooking, and loved getting together for big family gatherings.
In addition to his loving wife, Carol, Robert is survived by his children, Amy K. Fenn and husband, Christopher, of Dover, PA, Matthew R. Gerkin and wife, Jamie, of Mechanicsburg, PA, and Eric J. Gerkin and wife, Melinda, of Wilmington, NC; 5 grandchildren, Nicole Fenn, Kelly Fenn, Savannah Gerkin, Stacie Gerkin and Marissa Gerkin; brother, Gerry Gerkin and wife, Karla, of Baltimore, OH; sisters, Kathy Matthews and husband, Dan, of Grove City, OH, Carolyn Gerkin of Reynoldsburg, OH, Theresa Trusty and husband, Kevin, of Groveport, OH, and Elaine Campbell and husband, Stan of Westerville, OH.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM, Thursday, January 19, 2017, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover, PA with Monsignor James M. Lyons as Celebrant. Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard Burial Detail will provide military honors. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA.
