Bernard L. Phelps, 81, of Mt. Airy, MD, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 30, 2015 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Born on Monday, November 26, 1934 in Frederick, MD, he was a son of the late William and Pauline Wilhide Phelps. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Doris.
Bernard was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army having served from 1957 to 1960. Following his military service, he was employed by the Food and Drug Administration as a civil engineer for more than 20 years, retiring in 1985. He was creative through his ideas and drawings. He was quick to be to fix and build new things around his home, and in his spare time enjoyed horse racing.
Survivors include his daughter, Kim L. (Phelps) Woltman and her husband, Rod; a grandson, Kory C. Smith, all of Hanover; and two brothers, Jerry Phelps of Florida and William Phelps of Frederick, MD.
A graveside service will be held at 11 am Friday, January 8, 2016 at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 725 Baltimore Street, Hanover with The Rev. Timothy J. Kielley officiating. Military honors will be rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
