Chester J. “Chet” Hoke, Jr., 89 of Hanover, passed peacefully on Thursday, Oct. 16, 2014 at Hanover Hospital surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Elizabeth J. “Lil” (Schek) Hoke, his wife of 64 years.
Born September 27, 1925 in York, PA he was the son of the late Chester J., Sr. and Elizabeth (Millhouse) Hoke.
Mr. Hoke was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover where he served on a variety of committees including church council. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Air Force serving his country proudly during World War II. Chet was also a member of the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post 14, Hanover and previously served as a Board member of the VNA/Hospice, Hanover. Mr. Hoke owned and operated American Health and Life Insurance Co., Hanover for many years prior to his retirement. He then became very active with the York Co. 4H Club and enjoyed raising sheep and growing and selling Christmas trees. Chet also spent much of his free time gardening, golfing and especially loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife Lil, he is survived by six children; Jeannette LaChat and her husband Ruben Ortiz of Gaithersburg, MD, Jim Hoke of Hanover, Dave Hoke and his wife Martha of Boca Raton, FL, Lisa Riband and her husband Anthony of Doylestown, Susan Fogarty and her husband Seamus of Hanover and Jennifer Minushkin and her husband Jeff of Great Falls, VA; one sister, Violet Hoke of Belgium; eleven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. He was preceded in death by a brother Richard Hoke.
A service to celebrate the life of Chet Hoke will be held at 11:00am Tuesday at St. Matthew Lutheran Church 30 W. Chestnut St., Hanover, PA with Rev. Dr. Daniel M. Yeiser officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Tuesday from 10am until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA where full military honors will be provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Chester Hoke to Homewood at Plum Creek, 425 Westminster Ave., Hanover, PA 17331 or St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 W. Chestnut St., Hanover, PA 17331.
