Theodore “Ted” Jenkins, 90 of Hanover and formerly of Locust Valley, N.Y., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 31st, 2016 at York Hospital. He was the loving husband, for 64 years, of Barbara Ann (Brooks) Jenkins.
Born September 7, 1925 in Schenectady, NY, he was a son of the late Gardiner and Beatrice (Phillips) Jenkins.
Ted proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII and was a P.O.W. survivor. He was a member of the VFW Post #2506, Hanover and the American Legion Post #14, Hanover. Mr. Jenkins was employed for more than 30 as a cooperative extension agent for the state of New York retiring in 1982. Ted was very active in the Hanover Public School District where he developed the Volunteer Mentor Program at Washington, Hanover St. and Clearview Elementary Schools. Ted was also an advisor and presenter for the Middle School Holocaust Program. In addition, he was very involved with the local Head Start program was a member of the Hanover Kiwanis Club and St. Matthew Lutheran Church. Ted was well known for giving speeches to many groups in the Hanover area about his WWII experiences including being a Prisoner of War (P.O.W.).
In addition to his wife, Barbara, Ted is survived by his daughter, Jean Halvorsen, his grandson, Ryan and his wife Sharon Halvorsen all of Hanover. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Jenkins, his daughter, Cheryl Jenkins and his grandson, Sean Halvorsen.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mr. Ted Jenkins will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, September 3rd, 2016 at the Wetzel Funeral Home and Crematory, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, PA with the Rev. Faye C. Snyder officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover where full military honors will be provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
