John E. Prettyman, 80, of Hanover passed peacefully with his family and pastor by his side, Wednesday, Feb.4th , 2009 at York Hospital. He was the loving husband of Tanya (Poole) Prettyman for 25 years. Born Feb. 23rd, 1928 in Chester, PA, he was the son of the late John Edward and Mary (Wooten) Prettyman.
Mr. Prettyman retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after more than 21 years of service in the United States Army. He served during both WWII and Korea as an intelligence officer with the U.S. Army Security Agency. He then spent time at the N.S.A. (National Security Agency) in Fort Meade, MD. John was also a member of First United Methodist Church, Hanover and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Littlestown.
Additional survivors include four sons, Bill Prettyman and his wife Jean, W. Melbourne, FL, Tom Prettyman and his wife Linda, Palmdale, CA, Ed Prettyman and his wife Tracy, Severn, MD and Bob Prettyman, Glen Burnie, MD; three stepchildren, Andrea Weatherford, Littlestown, PA, Craig Mazeska and his wife Leslie Charlestown, W.VA and Ryan Mazeska and his wife Tracey, Hanover, PA; and six grandchildren, Briana Prettyman, Devon Weatherford, Taylor Weatherford, Zachary Mazeska, Zoe Mazeska and Zadie Mazeska. He was preceded in death by a son, John Charles Prettyman.
The service to celebrate the life of Mr. Prettyman will be held 10:30am, Saturday, Feb. 7th, at First United Methodist Church, 200 Frederick St., Hanover with Rev. Thomas H. Jacobs officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover with full military honors provided by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
