Charles Browning Casto, 86, of Hanover, PA and formerly of Derwood, MD peacefully went to meet his Savior on Thursday, July 11, 2019, while at home. He was the loving husband of Wanda Lee (Townsend) Casto. They shared 65 wonderful years of marriage.
Charles was born July 25, 1932, in Volga, West Virginia, the fifth of twelve children of the late Bovy and Neva (Malcolm) Casto. He grew up on a farm in a loving Christian family.
Charles graduated from Philippi High School in Philippi, WV in 1950 and graduated from Fairmont State College, Fairmont, WV in 1954 with a Bachelors Degree in Education. While in college, he played baseball and was a left-handed pitcher for the team. After graduation, he married Wanda and they moved to Ohio. He taught for one year in Johnsville, OH where he also coached basketball and football.
He was drafted into the Army and served his country honorably for two years. Following his time in the military, he resumed teaching in Ohio and later received his Masters Degree from the University of Virginia in 1961. Charles retired in June 1990 after teaching mathematics for 29 years at Wheaton High School, Wheaton, MD where he was also head of the mathematics department for several years.
Charles and Wanda have been members of Mill Creek Parish United Methodist Church in Derwood, MD for over 50 years. He was very active and served in many capacities. Charles mentored many young men of Boy Scout Troop 458, including his sons; where he served as Scout Master for several years. Charles enjoyed activities with his family and others including camping, traveling, and watching and taking part in sports. He delighted in observing his grandchildren’s activities and sports. Baseball was his favorite sport and he was an avid Baltimore Orioles fan. He enjoyed tossing the baseball and playing cornhole with his family. He spent many hours working Sudoku puzzles. Charles was very proud of his recently acquired 1929 Model A which gave him fond memories of driving himself and others to and from college.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Charles B. Casto Jr. and wife, Christina, Buffalo, NY, David Casto, Hanover, PA, and Michelle Casto Augustine and husband, Robertson, Merritt Island, FL; and grandchildren, Magellan Carmichael and husband, Rob, Salem, MA, James Casto, Phoenix, AZ, Joshua Casto, Hanover, PA, Noah Casto and wife, Katie, Woodland Park, CO, Hannah Kirby and husband, Alex, Hanover, PA, Robertson Augustine, Melbourne, FL, and Kathleen Augustine, Merritt Island, FL, and one great granddaughter, Morgan Kay Carmichael, Salem, MA; siblings, Hope Thrasher, Palmetto, FL, Kenny Casto, Portsmouth, VA, Keith Casto and wife, Doris, Chesapeake, VA,.Shirley Louk, Philippi, WV, and Blanche McDaniels and husband, Richard, Philippi, WV; and numerous other family members.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Eugene Casto, Deloris Sponaugle, Patricia Haller, James Casto, Edmund Casto, and Linda Casto.
On Tuesday, July 23, 2019, there will be visitation at the Wetzel Funeral Home, 549 Carlisle Street, Hanover, PA 17331, from 11:00 am to 12 noon. The service will follow at 12 noon with Rev. Lynn Cairns officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA.
