Dr. Joseph G. Constantino, 96, died Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at Homewood at Plum Creek where he had resided since October of this year.
Born October 13, 1914 in Brooklyn, NY, he was the third of nine children of the late, John and Antonetta Attanasio Constantino. He was also preceded in death by his wife Helen Vilella Constantino, who died in 1988.
Dr. Constantino was a 1935 graduate of New York University, and graduated from the Marquette University School of Medicine in 1940. During World War II, he served as a Major with the US Army in the South Pacific Theater, where he was an Aviation Medical Examiner and flight surgeon from 1941 – 1946. In 1946, he returned to civilian life and began his private practice in Internal Medicine in New York City. He was appointed Corporate Medical Director of Pan Am Airlines in 1973 and served in that position until his retirement in 1983.
In 1971, he was appointed a delegate to the Industrial Council for Tropical Health at Harvard University, and served as a member of the Medical Advisory Panel to the Federal Aviation Administration. He was a past president of the Airlines Medical Directors Association, and was appointed Senior Consultant in Tropical Diseases for the City of New York’s Department of Health. He received many honors, was a published author, and was an active member and fellow of many medical associations.
Survivors include his sister, Mary Gallipani of Queens, NY; a brother, John Constantino of Littlestown; and 12 nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 9:30 AM Saturday, December 11, 2010 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5125 Grandview Road, Hanover by The Rev. Timothy Marcoe, celebrant. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery with military honors being rendered by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
