William Houghland, 95, of Hanover, PA, entered into God's eternal care, Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the Hanover Hospital.
Born August 25, 1916 in Brooklyn NY, he was the son of the late William F. and Kunigundia (Leicht) Houghland. He was the husband of Jane E. (Knight) Houghland with whom he would have celebrated 72 years of marriage on June 15th.
William was a graduate of Bushwick High School in Brooklyn, NY as well as the City College of New York where he earned a degree in accounting. During his college career, he was a member of the Men's Water Polo Team and Men's Gymnastic Teams.
He served his country proudly in the United States Navy and earned the rank of Lt. JG.
William was employed as a CPA in New York prior to moving to Hanover where he served as co-founder and Vice President of EMECO Corporation for several years. Mr. Houghland was also the owner and Chairman of Board of the Hanover Pen Corporation.
He was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ of Hanover as well as the National Cost Accountants Association of York. William served many years on the Board of Directors for the Boy Scouts. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2506 of Hanover, the American Legion Post #14 of Hanover and a 50 year member of the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks Post #763.
In his spare time, William enjoyed fishing and boating, playing bridge and other card games, repairing things, swimming and flower gardening.
William and his wife, Jane loved traveling together over their many years of marriage. They visited all 50 states, went on 13 cruises as well as making three trips to Europe. Together, they enjoyed spending time over the past 30 years at their condominium in Naples, Florida and their cottage in Sherwood Forest, Maryland.
In addition to his wife, Jane, William is survived by two sons, William R. Houghland and his wife, Patricia of Pensacola, FL, Robert F. Houghland and his wife, Connie of Hanover, PA, two daughters, Nancy J. Hanson and her husband, Jerome of East Berlin, PA, Linda M. Best and her husband, Barry of Fort Loudon, PA, eleven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Houghland and Everard Houghland.
A funeral service to celebrate and remember William's life will be held 1 PM, Saturday, June 9, 2012 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA with the Rev. Peg Grzelkowski officiating. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 6 - 8 PM, Friday, June 8, 2012 at the funeral home. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
