Patrick Joseph Canavan, 83, of Hanover, PA, entered into God's eternal care, Friday, December 9, 2011 at the Brethren Home Community, New Oxford, PA.
Born December 21, 1927 in East Liverpool, OH, he was the son of the late Neil C. and Estus (Dornan) Canavan. He was the loving husband of the late Christine J. Canavan to whom he was married for 59 years until her passing on July 13, 2008.
Patrick graduated from Miami of Ohio in 1952 with a B.S. in Business Administration and received his Masters of Fine art in Painting from the Maryland Institute of Art in 1965.
Patrick retired in 1991 after 26 years teaching as a Professor of Fine Arts at both Towson State University, Towson, MD and the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Baltimore, MD. During his career he had a one man show at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1962, received the Faculty Research Grant in 1974, received the Pollack Krasner Foundation Grant in 1990, and received the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts Fellowship in Painting in 1993. He painted everyday of his life " it was his diet for living.
Patrick loved music, especially jazz, watching the Ravens, Miami University Football and having lively discussions about life and art with his friends Pat McGuire and Tony Raimo.
Patrick was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served his country proudly during World War II.
Patrick is survived by one daughter, Kandie Canavan and partner Ken Cooke of Hanover, PA, one step sister, Joyce Canavan Stewart and husband Roger of Fullerton, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one son, Stumpy Canavan who died August 6, 2009.
