Obituary

Warren H. George, 91, of Hanover, PA, entered into God's eternal care, Saturday, November 14, 2015 at his residence, Homewood at Plum Creek, Hanover, PA. Family was with him at the time of passing.

Born July 21, 1924 in Aspers, PA, Warren was the son of the late John W. Jr. and Ruth A. (Melhorn) George. Warren was the loving husband of the late Elouise D. (Fuhrman) George, who passed May 4, 2015. Married in 1947, Warren and Elouise celebrated over 68 years together, almost all of which were spent together in their home on Broadway in Hanover.

Warren was a 1942 graduate of Eichelberger High School where he excelled as a student athlete. He spent much of his youth farming when not in school. Not long after graduation, he voluntarily enlisted in the US Army and soon found himself on the front lines of the World War II European Theater. For several months in early 1945 Warren was a POW, a captive soldier kept marching through Germany through Liberation Day. Subsequently, Warren was a life-long hobbyist historian and enjoyed attending events and sharing accounts of his war experiences in the 1940's. He is an honoree in the Court of Valor at Prospect Hill Cemetery in York for his WWII service.

Following his proud active-duty service, Warren was trained in radio and electronics repair in Baltimore, MD. His working life was spent in his hometown area, through employment at Hanover Wood Heel, Hanover Industries, and Gobrecht's, where he worked on the first television sets to come into Hanover.

In his free time, Mr. George was an active member of Grace United Church of Christ, Hanover, PA for many decades. Warren and Elouise's volunteerism in the Hanover area was impressive-mostly through their church, Eichelberger Performing Arts Center, and over 25 years with the local Meals on Wheels program. Warren was a member of Hanover's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2506 and the Amvets Post 22. He served as a past president of the Hanover High School Booster Club. He was an outstanding softball player and coach, and enjoyed all athletics. A favorite topic of conversation was his four grandkids' high school competitions in swimming, field hockey, and football. A love of the outdoors, particularly fishing, was a hobby he shared with his children and grandchildren.

Warren is survived by his daughter, Patricia A. Wilson of York, PA; his son, Andrew S. George and their daughter-in-law Ann George of Morristown, NJ; his brother-in-law Earl Fuhrman of Hanover, PA; four grandchildren and their families: grandson Jon Wilson of Honolulu, HI; granddaughter Stephanie Wilson of Pacific Palisades, CA; granddaughter Brielle George of Morristown, NJ; and granddaughter Devon George of Bethlehem, PA with her husband Mike Pfeiffer and great-grandson Thomas Pfeiffer. He was preceded in death by his siblings, four brothers and one sister: Clair George, James George, Dale George, Richard George and Mae Adams. Amazingly, four of the five older brothers returned home safely to Pennsylvania where they would live into old age.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family. All are invited to join the family for a Celebration of Life and a luncheon at 12:00pm, Monday, November 23, 2015 at Grace United Church of Christ, 100 Fourth Street, Hanover, PA 17331. Memories of Warren are memories of consistent devotion to specific elements of his life, unchanging over decades. They are filled primarily by his family life: his Elouise who he met in high school; his active participation in the childhood and adult lives of his children and grandchildren; his dedication to his church, volunteerism, athletics, and personal WWII history-all filled his daily routines. These are the traits that defined Warren George. And the setting for all these memories is his Hanover area community of 91 years.
