John Daniel Shafer, resident of Homewood at Plum Creek Nursing Center, died there on Thursday, September 16, 2010.
Mr. Shafer was 95 years old and a long time resident of Hanover. He was born in Paterson, NJ and came to Hanover at age 12 with his family when his father Russell M. Shafer, Sr. founded the Revonah Spinning Mills.
John Shafer, known throughout his life as Jack, was a graduate of Mercersburg Academy and attended Lehigh University. He spent his entire business career at Revonah where he rose to the position of President. He served for many years on the board of the Bank of Hanover.
Mr. Shafer, a life member of the Hanover Country Club where his father was one of the founders, was an avid and accomplished amateur golfer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jennie and Russell Shafer, his only sibling Russell Shafer, Jr., and his wife of 73 years Mary (Stambaugh) Shafer
Jack is survived by his daughters, Jane Shafer Schott of Hanover, PA, Ann Shafer Schwarz of Weston, MA, and his son John Shafer, Jr., of Duxbury, MA. In addition to his three children Mr. Shafer is survived by eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
No public service is planned. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Hanover Hospital 300 Highland Avenue, Hanover, PA 17331 or the Hanover Visiting Nurse Association, 440 North Madison Street, Hanover, PA 17331.
