Ellen Gene Wolff
November 20, 1946 - April 2, 2007
Ellen Gene Wolff, 60, of New Oxford and formerly of Hanover, died Monday, April 2, 2007 at the Brethren Home Community after an extended illness.
Born November 20, 1946, in Hanover, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Elizabeth (Haas) Wolff.
Ellen was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Hanover. A 1964 graduate of Eichelberger High School, she later earned her A.B. in education from the College of William and Mary in 1968. Ellen taught elementary school in King George County, Virginia, for two years before moving to Hanover and teaching in the Hanover Public School District for 31 years.
Ellen was a member of numerous organizations, including the Hanover Area Historical Society, Hanover Education Association, PSEA Retired, Hanover YMCA, and the Revonah Red Hat Society. She also served as a volunteer guide at The Wills House in Gettysburg. Her love of both bears and libraries influenced the choice of Christopher Robin and Pooh Bear as the theme for the fountain in the children’s wing of the Guthrie Memorial Library, Hanover’s Public Library.
Surviving is her brother, Alfred Young Wolff, Jr., of Bridgewater, MA; her sister, Clare Wolff Neal, of Belle Rive, IL; her cousin, Ann Young McCarney, of Morgantown, PA; and many dear friends.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2007, at the Nicarry Meeting House at the Brethren Home Community, 2990 Carlisle Pike, New Oxford, with Rev. Matthew B. Pensinger officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the meeting house. Burial will be private in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
