Marie C. Brown, 101 of Hanover passed peacefully on Sunday, October 9th, 2011 at the Brethren Home Community, New Oxford. She was the loving wife of the late Ira Royce Brown who died March 29, 1976.
She was born March 1, 1910 in Littlestown, PA the daughter of the late Willis Ammon and Cora Mae (Renner) Staley.
Mrs. Brown was the oldest member of St. Mark Lutheran Church, Hanover where she was a member since the age of 13 and she retired from Sylvania Shoe in 1972 after 15 years of service. In 1979, she went back to school and received her GED. She was a member of the YMCA study club and the Hanover AARP.
Mrs. Brown lived independently in her own home until two weeks shy of her 100th birthday. Church, family and friends were her life. She enjoyed quilting; board games; card playing; word puzzles and traveling. She made many trips to Florida, driving herself until well into her 90’s.
She is survived by her children, Charles A. Brown and wife Elaine of Hanover; Lewis E. Brown and fiancée Marilyn Miller of Summerfield, FL; Robert L. Brown and wife Susan of Mesa, AZ; Philip A. Brown and wife Nancy of Abbottstown; Michael G. Brown and wife Nancy of Hanover, half-sister, Ruth C. Stayman of York, daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Brown of Wildwood, FL, 17 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Ira R. Brown, Jr.; infant daughter, Barbara Brown; grandsons, Roy Brown; Jeffrey Brown and daughter-in-law, Joann Brown.
A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Brown will be held on Saturday, October 15th at 11 AM at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 129 Charles Street, Hanover with Rev. Kirk Griffin officiating. A time to share memories and an opportunity to view will be on Friday from 6 until 8 PM at the Wetzel Funeral Home, 549 Carlisle Street, Hanover. A second viewing will be held on Saturday from 10 Am until the time of the service at the church. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hanover. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons.
