Betty Jane Diehl Michael, 91, of Hanover, PA, entered God’s eternal care Sunday, February 26, 2017 at SpiriTrust Lutheran, the Village at Gettysburg, surrounded by her loving family.
Born March 8, 1925 in Ivyland, PA, she was the daughter of the late LeRoy Daniel and Bernice Marie (Foulk) Diehl. Betty Jane was the loving wife of the late Quenton Frederick Michael who died February 24, 1983.
Betty Jane was a 1942 graduate of West York High School, where she graduated 7th in her class. She worked in the payroll department for Martin Perry in York, PA from 1942-1945, then for the BonTon, and the Hanover Public School District, where she enjoyed working in the school cafeteria. She retired from Utz Quality Foods.
Betty Jane was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover PA, where she was a former Sunday School teacher, a member of the Congregation Council, and sang in the church choir for many years. She was a Cub Scout den mother, a member of the Eastern Star, and volunteered at the YWCA with the Mothers of Teens.
Betty Jane enjoyed growing up on her family farm in Seven Valleys, PA. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother who enjoyed baking, gardening and knitting.
Betty Jane is survived by her children, the Rev. Richard Michael and wife Bonnie of Arendtsville, PA, the Rev. Dwane Michael and wife Felicitas of Alamo, CA, Brenda M. Herring and husband Glenn of Hanover, PA, Dr. Dwight Michael and wife Sally of Gettysburg, PA, and Barbara M. Sanders and husband Patrick “Paco” of Hanover, PA; thirteen grandchildren, Nathan R. Michael, Joshua L. Michael, Sarah E. C. Michael, Alex Q. Michael, Kristin M. Hahn, Allison M. Staub, Brian T. Herring, Adam Q. Michael, Andrew J. Michael, Zachary D. Michael, M. Abigail Michael, Sarah J. Sanders and Elizabeth M. “Bitsy” Sanders; 11 great-grandchildren, Ryan, Austin, Alex, Connor, Mackenzie, Collin, Madeline, Logan, Rylan, Liam, and Cameron; and one brother, Warren L. Diehl of Orlando, FL, and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard D. Diehl and one sister, Kathryn L. Diehl Wecker.
A service to celebrate and remember Betty Jane will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, March 3, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 127 York Street, Hanover, PA, with the Rev. E. Robert Burkhart officiating. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be held from 6:00-8:00 PM, Thursday, March 2, 2017 at the Kenworthy Funeral Home, Inc., 269 Frederick Street, Hanover, PA and from 10:00-11:00 AM, Friday, March 3, 2017 at the church. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Hanover, PA.
