Obituary
Kyle Hearn of Hanover (Pa.) passed away on Monday, June 6, 2022, at the age of 78. Born on October 9, 1943 in Georgetown, Mississippi, he was the son of E. Baxter and Amanda (Lavelle) Hearn. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Roger Hearn, Edward Hearn, and Alfred Hearn. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hanover.
A graduate of Monticello (Miss.) High School and the University of Mississippi, Kyle committed his life to public service. While a student at Ole Miss, he accepted an appointment by former Mississippi Lieutenant Governor Carroll Gartin and later entered the U.S. Air Force, serving in the United States Air Force Security Service.
Following his honorable discharge, Kyle continued his lifetime of service initially through his employment at Ellisville State School, Ellisville, Miss., and later spent over a quarter of a century employed by the Federal Government. His federal employment permitted he and his family to live in the United Kingdom and Thailand. He also traveled throughout the world on numerous temporary assignments.
Kyle enjoyed playing brass instruments. Initially learning to play the trumpet and then later the trombonium and euphonium, Kyle was active in the band in high school, college, and with several local community bands. He felt honored to have participated in Taps Across America in support of fallen servicemembers and veterans.
Known for a sharp wit, Kyle often went by the nom de plume, “Jack Onager”. Urban legend has it that he may have had a handful of letters to the editor published under the name. In his final days, he was proud of having a comic panel suggestion nationally published by Pluggers.
Kyle is survived by his wife, Susan, his two sons and their wives, Zachary and Tracey Hearn of York (Pa.) and Nicholas and Billie Hearn of American Fork (Ut.), and his daughter Laura Hearn of Manhattan (N.Y.). He also was “Pops” to his two grandsons, Boden Hearn and Kyle Hearn.
The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to Taps Across America or the charity of their choice.
